Best Slow Cooker Recipes

With the winter chill in the air I think it’s time to pull out the slow cooker and share some of my favourite winter recipes.  I love my slow cooker, it’s just so easy to throw everything into the pot of a morning, and come how to a house full of delicious food smells.

If you have a favourite slow cooker dish on your website please feel free to add a picture and a link using the linky tool at the bottom of the page.

My 5 Best Slow Cooker Recipes

1/ Maple Syrup Baked Beans w Balsamic Vinegar

Homemade baked beans have a rustic wholesome appeal, and satisfy all the winter time cravings for comfort food. These have so much more flavour and sophistication than the canned variety. Recipe

2/ Honey Soy Lamb Shanks

Put these shanks in the slow cooker before work and return in the evening to an aromatic home, with dinner waiting. The meat will melt in your mouth. Honey Soy Lamb Shanks are delicious with rice or noodles. Recipe

3/ Donna Hay – Slow Cooked Balsamic Lamb Roast

Slow Cooker Recipe – Donna Hay Balsamic Roast Lamb

This is a recipe adapted from one of Donna Hays dishes.  Initially I passed over this roast because the meat was so dark, which I felt made the dish look less appealing. That was a huge mistake! The roast is dark in colour due to the inclusion of balsamic vinegar, and the flavour is amazing!  Recipe

4/ Balinese Slow Cooked Duck

Now for something a little different, we have a Balinese slow cooked duck. This dish is usually cooked in a slow charcoal fire overnight, but the slow cooker gives a similar result. The accompanying sauce can be as spicy or mild as you like. Recipe

5/ Maple Syrup Lamb Shanks

One of the most popular recipes on my website during the winter months is this slow cooker recipe for Maple Syrup Lamb Shanks. The sauce is sweet and rich and the meat moist and lush. Recipe

About Julie

  1. Thanks for these. I love my slow cooker but I don’t use it to it’s full potential. Can’t wait to try the roast and that duck!

  2. Oh, Julie! Love, love this post! You know Gretchen and I adore the super-fast, easy prep of crock-pot recipes! Maple Syrup Baked Beans with Balsamic?!? My oh my – count me in! I seriously wish I could stab my fork right on into my computer screen to try some of the Honey Soy Lamb Shanks, and the luscious sauce on the Maple Syrup Lamb Shanks looks just to-die-for! Excellent inspiration here, my friend! And thanks so much for inviting us to link up – what fun! 😀

  3. Alesah Villalon :

Hi, Julie. Your choices are sooo mouthwatering, especially the baked beans and honey soy lamb. The honey soy lamb recipe will end my day with a bang – leaving home with the slow cooker not only making dinner for everyone but also giving off an aroma that could drown the day’s stress away. Great tips, great recipes, a great writer! Thanks!

  4. I’m dying to try that duck dish Julie! It is definitely slow cooker time now too 😀

  5. I really have to try and make baked beans! Thanks for the invitation to take part, but I don’t have a slow cooker so I cannot share any recipes 🙂

  6. All of your recipes sounds so good, even here in the heat and humidity of Hong Kong summers. I especially like the look of both of your lamb shank and that honey soy lamb is amazing too. I need to give them a try soon, but first I have to invest in a slow cooker. I had one when we lived in the States but have not purchased one since living in Asia. Sounds like I need to get that sorted out. Thanks for the great ideas. Have a super week. Take Care, BAM

  7. The maple syrup baked beans with balsamic vinegar look soooo great. Great idea for a round-up. The slow cooker is indeed a fantabulous invention =)

  8. All your dishes looks delicious ! Here in France, we go into the summer but I keep it for the next winter ;)xo

  9. This is awesome! I’ve only got a tiny slow cooker that my former housemate left me but am keen to try some of your recipes out on that… Woop woop =)

  10. Great recipes. I can tell you like your lamb 😉 I think I am going to have to try the Balinese duck.

  11. What a wonderful meal, so yummy!
Typically what I like cooking in the winter!
Is it the winter now in Australia? In France it’s Spring but not really as we have a lot of rainy and cold days!

  12. The lamb dishes in particular look so appetising. It’s almost summer here in the UK but I shall make a note of these recipes as we shall be grateful for these during our cold winter!

  13. Oh yummo!! I don’t even know where to start! I think I’ll try your baked beans first! xxxx

  14. There is so much choice when using slow cookers, delicious recipe round up 😀
Remind me to try some of these for my daddy 🙂

  15. Bill would love all of your slow cooker recipes…he’s a huge fan of baked beans, lamb and duck. I’ll have to try some of these once our cold weather returns 🙂

  16. I have a slow cooker somewhere in the kitchen lost and forgotten. I’ve used it only once or twice.. But I might have to pull it out sometime soon because everything here looks delicious, especially those baked beans!

  17. Wow…slow cooked duck sounds wonderful!!! I love duck and order in restaurants, but don’t really cook at home yet. I should find good duck meat and try that recipe! I know my whole family will fall in loveeee. 🙂

  18. I had a whole (frozen) duck a while ago that I’d bought from a supermarket sale but didn’t quite know what to do with…ended up roasting it with a tad bit of spice.Wish I’d seen your recipe before- it looks amazing!! Your honey soy lamb shanks look amazing too- I’ve never actually made honey-soy anything despite being Asian haha. Must give it a try sometime looks so good!

  19. Can’t believe I have never owned a slow cooker – all of your recipes look heavenly!
    Have a beautiful day.
    🙂 Mandy xo

  20. You’ve gone all out here with the slow cooker. What a great way to mix things up (for my slow cooker that’s used to chicken and beef). 😉 I bet my husband would love it too!!

  21. All of the above recipes look so tasty – very comforting and hearty too, and just befitting for this weather atm. Honey soy lamb shanks look like me favourite. Yum!! 😀

  22. Ooh these all look great. Love using my slow cooker in winter – so easy!

  23. Those lamb shanks look killer! And I love the idea of using a crock pot for baked beans (a dish I often make for summer cookouts, as well as for winter). Great roundup of delish stuff here — thanks.

  24. Just bookmarked the baked beans, they sound so lovely, what a great line-up of recipes. The weather here is getting quite warm, if your not grilling this is the time of the year to start the crock pot up to keep the heat down in the kitchen.

  25. Oh yum! If there’s one thing I love about winter it is hearty stews. Anything that warms the soul, I’ll add these to my repertoire for the colder months.

    Krissie x –

  26. All of your dishes sound great. The nice thing about a slow cooker is that it can be used all year. It is wonderful in the summer when you don’t want to turn your oven on because of the heat.

  27. All of these look mouth-watering. My favourite would be the maple syrup lamb shanks. It’s time I invested in a slow cooker and maybe this is the inspiration I needed:-)

  28. Love your suggestions Julie! Pinned and shared! Your Lamb Shanks would be perfect with this freezing weather in Adelaide!

    • I have been trialling a new lamb shank recipe too! I hope yo share it shortly. I love lamb shanks and flow cooked meats in the cold weather, although thankfully Coffs Harbour never gets as cold as Adelaide!!
