Cafe & Restaurant Reviews
The Bluewater Brasserie

So what do you do on a miserable rainy Saturday? It isn’t the first wet day we’ve had recently so we had all had enough of being trapped indoors. Ordinarily I would have just gone into the kitchen and done some baking, but with the family restless we needed to get out of the house. Mr GG suggested we take a drive down the coast and see if we could find a photogenic area.

My mind went immediately to the Nambucca Heads area which is about 45km south of Coffs Harbour. It is a quiet little seaside town with nice beaches, river and mangroves so I hoped that in the gloomy weather I would still be able to get a few nice shots.

Also, I was getting a little hungry and I remember The Bluewater Brasserie by the beach serves some really good pub food. It seemed like the perfect choice for such a dismal day. We have eaten there before but I have never written a review so now I was set with a purpose for the day.

By the time we sat down at the table I was cold through to the bone. I borrowed a second jumper off Mr GG and started looking at the menu for some warming comfort food. I noticed another patron had a shepherd pie and I knew instantly that would be the dish for me.

When the pie arrived it hit the spot. There were mountains of creamy mash potato topping a deliciously rich meaty pie. Oh, it was divine; it was just what I needed to chase away the chill.
Hubby ordered the Tasmania Salmon which was usually served with a salad; he elected to have his dish served with vegetables and mash. We were obviously both in need of a winter warm up.

The skin of the salmon was delicious crisp and lush and the salmon beautifully moist, it was served with a garlic aioli which I know was good because Mr GG scraped up every last bit. The salmon wasn’t exactly cooked medium rare as described but Mr GG had no complaints as he thoroughly enjoyed his dish.
The little ones had been promised chips. Chips are a “sometimes food” in our house so this was a real treat and they were digging in as soon as the bowl hit the table.

The chips were out of this world, they were a gorgeously crisp beer batter chip with the softest fluffy potato middle. They were also seasoned but I couldn’t pick the flavour. The kids demolished the chips and we were all feeling the warm glow of a stomach full of comfort food. It is good honest pub food, full of flavour and generous serving sizes.
Bluewater Brasserie is open for lunch from 12-2.30pm and dinner 6.00-8.30pm 7 days per week.
It is located on the Nambucca Heads Foreshore on Wellington Drive. Reservations are advisable as it is always quite busy Ph: (02) 6568 6394.
So readers, tell me what you like to do on a rainy day. Maybe you can give me some ideas for next time.

The extra long Easter break seems to have given everyone the opportunity to take some time for a well deserved break. Is seems a little relaxing and socializing is on everyone’s agenda at the moment. We are catching up with family at the central coast and took advantage of the opportunity to try a Tapas Restaurant I’ve had my eye on for a while. It is always busy and I was lucky enough to reserve the last table. It seems I wasn’t the only one wanting a little sangria and Tapas to kick off the holiday.

The atmosphere is busy, modern and friendly and we were looked after well by the waiter. Naturally we started with a jug of Sangria while we made our way through the delicious sounding menu.

It is always difficult to know how many Tapas dishes to order so we asked the advice of the waiter; he suggested we should order three Tapas dishes per person to share between the four of us.
The Sangria arrived and I was pleased to taste the extra hit of spice which had been added to the wine and fruit. It really gave the Sangria an authentic spicy flavour.

We each chose our dishes, which started appearing almost immediately. First up were the Rosemary & Chilli Marinated Olives ($6.60) and the Hommus with warmed Pita bread ($6.60)

Tapas are always a great choice for socializing with friends. I love sharing food anyway as I always like to taste everything on the table so naturally Tapas is a good option for me.

Next to arrive at the table was the Vegetable Frittata with Beetroot Labneh ($7.70 1 small square). The frittata was so light and creamy and very well suited to the tang of the beetroot labneh.

One of my favourite Tapas is always the Arancini so I was pleased when Michelle chose this dish. It was described as a Mushroom & Haloumi Arancini and was served with Aoili. ($8.50 3 small pcs) I love the crispy outer casing and the creamy rice filling of these delicious little balls of flavour and these were no exception. The Aioli finished them off nicely although it was a little awkward to share 3 small pieces between four adults. It would help if the number of pieces in each dish were the same.

The lamb cutlets with Olive Tapenade ($11.00 for 2 cutlets) arrived and we were all still very hungry, the dishes had been delicious and we were looking forward to more. We divided the two cutlets by four and I couldn’t help wishing we had known there would only be two per serve. This would have at least given us the option to order two serves, although at $22.00 for four cutlets it is probably a little steep anyway.
The cutlets were however deliciously moist and flavoursome and I am rather partial to olive tapenade so I enjoyed the dish, albeit only a small mouthful.

I feel that you can never go wrong with crumbed deep fried cheese, and happily our Crumbed Manchego sticks with Capsicum Jam ($8.50 for 3 pieces) were the next to arrive. These were as gorgeously creamy and delicious as you would imagine from gooey warmed cheese coated in crisp breadcrumbs. The capsicum Jam was the perfect accompaniment cutting through the richness.

We made short work of the Barossa Valley Chorizo ($9.40), it was served grilled with no accompaniments but chorizo is a must when indulging in little bites with friends and this particular sausage was a nice blend of spicy and smoky.

I had ordered the Salt & Chilli Squid with Mojo ($9.40) because a girl can never have too much Mojo! The calamari was coated in a delicious thin salt and chilli tempura and served with a spicy Harissa paste. It was an absolutely magic combination which we all enjoyed.
I usually try to steer clear of blatantly fatty foods but I
couldn’t resist ordering the Grilled Pork Belly with Harissa Paste ($9.40 for 4
pieces). I justified choosing the dish by promising myself I would do a little
extra exercise tomorrow. These little
babies were delicious. They just melted
in my mouth and were absolute, artery clogging perfection. I enjoyed every
second of our brief encounter. Unfortunately it seems to have been consumed a little too quickly and I missed getting a photo!

The Spanish Meatballs with Chermoula ($9.40 for 2 pieces) were the next dish to be divvied up. These were a tasty homestyle meatball in a tomato based sauce which had a hint of cumin and allspice to give it a lovely lift.

At this point in the meal I was concerned that I was still quite ravenous. We had just been served our Garlic & Chilli Prawns ($11.00 for 3 pieces) but I feared that once we worked out how to stretch these between four hungry adults we would still be left wanting.
I quickly perused the menu and added the BBQ Duck Pancakes with finely sliced vegetables and Chilli Tomato Jam ($9.40 1 mini spring roll cut in two) I hoped this dish would be a little more substantial. The flavour of the BBQ duck was superb, it had a lovely light Asian feel although I think we may have missed the Chilli Jam. The pancake was more like a crispy mini spring roll and the filling was so moist and delicious.

I really don’t like writing a review which isn’t completely glowing, especially when I have thoroughly enjoyed the meal, the atmosphere and the service. I do have to say, after all those dishes I was still quite hungry. At the end of the meal I decided that I probably wouldn’t need to engage in any exercise for my evening’s consumption. Although the dishes were rich there was barely a morsel in each serve, so not only would it not harm me, I still felt I needed something further to eat.
I understand that Tapas is supposed to be tiny servings to share but these were a little too miniscule. Also not knowing whether 1,2,3,or 4 pieces were going to arrive per dish made ordering for everyone a little difficult.
As we were leaving we noticed two desserts heading for a lucky recipient. The first was the Chocolate Chilli Cake with a web of toffee and gorgeous homemade Ice-cream. The second was a delicious Panacotta with berries. Both of these dessert were presented amazingly and I was almost tempted to sit back down for dessert, but our party was already heading for the door so I followed along behind. The dessert were priced between $11.00- $13.00 and were absolutely stunning.

Urbanspoon App Rocks

Have you ever been on a short getaway, you arrive somewhere hungry and looking for a place to eat. If you don’t know an area it is hard to know which restaurant would be the best choice.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I have turned into a bit of an "App Queen". An App that I particularly love at the moment is Urbanspoon's App. You simple click on the icon and it will locate your where abouts and let you know what restaurants are in the area.

You can narrow your search by food style or by budget, once you have a shortlist you can see how popular each restaurant is amongst patrons and read reviews. Most restaurant listings will include a menu and images of the food. It is almost a try before you buy scenario.

I know all you Sydney & Brisbane readers know about and use Urbanspoon but the purpose of this post is more for the regional NSW areas. Urbanspoon have recently opened the directory to include areas outside the capital cities. I have noticed that these areas haven’t really been particularly quick on the uptake. Consequently there are only a handful of good restaurants listed in most towns. Also the diner feedback for each restaurant is a little limited.

If you own a restaurant, and you’re proud of what you do, why not shout it out to the world via Urbanspoon and promote yourself. If your favourite restaurant is listed on Urbanspoon why not give them a pat on the back. Vote for them! Upload yummy images, or write a quick review. By giving some feedback via Urbanspoon everybody can have a great dining experience everytime. Providing feedback is as easy as opening the app and voting “I Like it” next to the restaurant listing.
I have to admit I haven’t been a major contributor in the passed but check out my profile on Urbanspoon. Stop in and say hi, I would love it if you could “friend” me, I'm a little lonely ;)
In short Urbanspoon rocks, I promise you will love this app as much as I do. So join up and start contributing feedback about restaurants you love. If you are already a member of Urbanspoon, leave a message at the bottom of this story and I will friend you :)

LaKiss Jetty Pizzeria

Let’s give a big cheer! We have finally made it to Friday!!
Is it just me, or does the weekend seem to take forever to come around some weeks?
If you are planning to curl up on the lounge with a glass of wine or a beer this weekend, why not add a delicious gourmet pizza to the plan and call it the perfect night in.
I had been hearing some great reviews about the new local pizza place. So last night I organized a group of 14 (including quite a large group of hungry kids) and we descended on the Pizzeria. LaKiss Jetty Pizzeria opened in January this year and serves a range of tradition and gourmet pizza’s, pasta’s and breads.

Our initial plans had been to order the pizza and eat it on the beach, but after a game of beach cricket we found the weather was turning a little cool. We decided we would take advantage of the “dine in” option at LaKiss and dragged the troops up from the beach.
Jac & I were the first through the doors and we both just melted with the delicious homemade pizza aroma. The smell took me right back to 20 years ago in Crown Street, Surry Hills when I used to get my Pizza’s from an Italian family business.
This is another family pizzeria owned by Paul & Katie a young husband and wife team. Paulie is a big Lebanese guy who we watched spinning the dough like a pro in the newly opened business, Katie is a local girl who has been working in the hospitality industry in the Coffs Area.

The story goes that right after their wedding Paul announced that 2010 was going to be the year of the pizza! Paul grew up in Sydney and had over a decade experience in Pizzeria and had always wanted to own his own shop.
After moving to Coffs Harbour in 2005, he realized there was a place here for some new tastes in Pizza, and he decided that one day he would be the man to deliver it to the locals.
Paul's experience resulted in the imaginative menu, and was mainly influenced by his own taste. He told me the nachos pizza came to him in a dream. He hates the mess of nachos and dreamed about the solution, he put his nachos on a pizza base.

I am certainly pleased he did. The Nachos Pizza was one of the many delicious pizza’s I tried, and thoroughly enjoyed. It included corn chips smothered in a tasty chili con carne and served with sour cream and guacamole.
Perhaps I am getting ahead of myself; I should mention that the Pizzeria also has a selection of tempting “starter” pizza’s. We ordered a Garlic Pizza Bread, Garlic and Cheese Pizza and I had to try the Olive & Feta Bread.

I was so impressed as I watched my bread being made, I love olive tapenade and lots of delicious tapenade was being spread liberally over the pizza base. Ooh I was so in love with my pizza by this stage. I turned my head as the olive oil was being liberally splash over the feta. I figured that it won’t affect my waistline if I don’t see it going on.

When the starters arrived they were just as delicious as they looked. I also tried the cheesey garlic bread and I was in heaven, the cheese was so deliciously garlicky and lush. Oh my god, I could have just eaten these, never mind the pizza! But with all the great smells it wasn’t going to be long before I was tempted away from my pizza bread.

The next pizza up was the Moroccan Lamb Pizza. Being Lebanese, Paul has always known labneh is the perfect accompaniment to lamb, so naturally the Moroccan lamb pizza is served with a delicious, creamy tangy labneh, roasted capsicum and baby spinach leaves. Marinating the lamb prior to cooking meant that the lamb was lusciously moist and full of flavour.

The LaKiss menu reflects Paul’s belief that pizza isn’t bad for you. Using good quality healthy ingredients pizza can be a healthy family meal. I ordered the Smoked Salmon pizza and I have to agree with Paul. It was a gorgeous pizza with ricotta cheese, Spanish onion, lemon, capers and baby spinach. I would consider this a perfectly healthy dish, and soo good!

Now as you all probably know I can’t go past blue cheese, I adore the creamy tang and I just crave it. I spotted a Pizza called the Blue Spud which includes potato chopped into matchstick, blue vein cheese, cracked pepper and fresh thyme. I just had to give that one a go as well. My tummy space was running a little low by this stage but it was mouthwateringly delicious.

I hadn’t quite eaten my body weight in pizza yet and everyone was raving over Jacqui Mexican pizza so I sat up a little straighter to make room for another slice and took the plunge. Jacs pizza had more spice and kick than most Mexican pizza’s I’ve had which is why our table was enjoying it so much, it was just so tasty!

Paul & Katie said that so far the local favourites are the Moroccan Lamb, Nacho, the Jetty Super Special and Gourmet Vegetarian. I a little embarrassed to say that I also had a few bites of hubby’s Jetty Super Special and it was exactly as the name suggests “Super Special”.

I watched the Gourmet Vegetarian being made for another order and it will be high on my list of pizza to order next time. This pizza includes eggplant, artichoke, sun dried tomato and feta cheese, YUMMY! You just can’t go wrong with this combination.

We did also order a Papa Joe which is basically a meat lover’s pizza but I think it may have been demolished before I had a chance to grab a bite. I have the photo as evidence that it was received but its stay with us was short lived.

LaKiss is BYO and has a great friendly atmosphere. Children are very much welcome, our six little monkeys were given colouring in to keep them amused while the pizza cooked, and the waitress was great bring jugs of water when the kids needed more.
I tried to get a general consensus on the two favourite pizza’s for the night. Most of the votes seemed to be for the Mexicana and the Nachos Pizza, but my favourites were the Smoked Salmon and the Moroccan Lamb. The children polished off three Hawaiian pizzas between them, a fair effort given that the age range is 3 to 6 years. So I think it is safe to say there is something on the menu for everyone.

Katie tells me that diners are welcome to customize pizzas to their own tastes but I think we will be working our way though the menu before we start mixing things up. There are so many great flavour combinations already.
LaKiss Pizzeria offers dine in, takeaway and home delivery, Tuesday though to Sunday. For orders or reservations Ph: 6652 1939.
Katie also mentioned a “stalkers special.” From time to time LaKiss will offer a special to their Facebook followers. So follow the link and “Like” LaKiss Jetty Pizzeria.

At the end of the meal Paul brough out a delicious plate of Dragonfruit for the adults... maybe it was for the kids too but we weren't sharing too many peices. (The kids were given their own little treat ;) )
Casualties Expresso

I am one of those people who cannot function of a morning without a strong cup of coffee. As with everything else in life, I am very fussy! I have a Boeme Cappuccino machine at home which is plumbed into the water supply, and hard wired to electricity. I also have a gorgeous husband who makes the perfect cup of coffee each morning for me.
So when I head away, a priority is finding a good cup of coffee. After all, how is a girl expected to face the day without a bit of a jolt? I arrived in Port Macquarie and was having a brief stroll around the shops when I noticed this quirky café. Casualty Expresso! I like the sound of it! It was buzzing and busy so I made a note to visit in the morning.

Next day when it came time to get my morning “eye opener” the place was quite busy. I ordered my “large, skim milk cappuccino with a double shot” (it always takes a bit more to get me going if I have to go out before I have had my coffee). The smiley girl behind the counter said “large skim heart starter” internally I smiled, yes… that is exactly what I needed.
I sat at the counter facing the street and watched cars and people go by while my coffee was prepared. I should explain the name of the café came about because I was actually sitting in, what was previously, the casualty room of the original Port Macquarie Ambulance station. As a play on the history of the building the café has references to its past in the form of the blood red walls, stethoscopes hanging on the walls and the menu is referred to as “the chart” and the red cross symbol is proudly displayed on top of the building.
My “heart starter” was delivered with a gorgeous almond biscotti which was lovely, crisp and sweet. I am pleased to say the coffee was “just what the doctor ordered” and I was ready to start another day.

Casualties Expresso is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm and located at the corner of Horton and Clarence Street in Port Macquarie.
Bells at Killcare

As we turn into the long drive, it is apparent that this was going to be a very unique property. The winding road snakes its way amongst natural bush and opens on to gorgeously manicured formal gardens and lawns. Bells at Killcare is located at Killcare Heights on the Central Coast and it is a seclude property set on 8.5 private and tranquil acres. Patrons can choose to stay in one of the gorgeous little cottages nestled amongst the bush, or visit for a day spa experience and finish with a meal in the restaurant.

Mr GG and I have made dinner reservations. We were looking forward to sampling the Modern Italian cuisine from the hated restaurant. Walking into the restaurant it has a fresh coastal feel with a quiet elegance. The first dining room is obviously for private group dining and would make an ideal venue for a small gathering.

We were seated in the main dining room and given a bottle of water and a bowl of complimentary olives and two homemade crackers whilst we perused the wine list. It is fair to say the wine list was extensive; there were 32 pages in all.

We made our choice and turned our attention to the menu. I have to remind my readers that we are right in the middle of the festive season so my appetite is waning a little from all the recent feasting. We had intended to share an entrée so that hubby and I could still manage three courses but alas none of the entrees really took my fancy.

I reasoned that this could be a blessing as I would defiantly have space for a dessert. Once we ordered complimentary bread rolls and olive oil were brought to the table and sat beside the olives. I was a little disappointed that the bread had not been warmed but I reasoned it made it easier to resist temptation and save myself for the meal. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed the bread and oil. I tried a bite and I agreed the oil was very richly olive and truly delicious.

For my main meal I had decided on a Pan-fried Scallop with crushed potato and samphire, caper and lemon dressing. We also ordered a side of Green Beans which was served in garlic and parsley butter and seasoned with a delicious amount of salt.

My meal could not have been more delicious! The gorgeous lemony, buttery smashed potato with delicate, sweet scallops was just too much. Potato is my ultimate comfort food and these were just the best, I am sure I was making a “when Harry met Sally face” by the time I finished my last buttery mouthful.

My gorgeous husband chose the grilled spiced Quail with Italian Cous Cous and Zucchini Trifolati. I was the first to try his dish and the quail was lovely, it had a spicy crunchy crumb coating which kept the meat deliciously moist inside. The zucchini Trifolato reminded me of a ratatouille which is one of my favourite dishes when it is done properly. The Trifolati was very flavoursome and a great match for the inner circle of spiced cous cous and sultana.
We were both very happy with the dishes we had chosen. The green beans which we ordered to accompany our mains were a great addition and finished the dishes perfectly. After four bread rolls, oil, olives a main and a side of green beans Mr GG wasn’t fussed on dessert but that’s why I had been “saving myself.”
I happily accept the dessert menu and informed hubby that I would chose a dessert for us. I was torn between two choices. The Banana & Hazelnut Tarte with Banana Gelato sound delicious and not too rich but another dessert was served with a Candied Ginger Gelato that had me salivating. Mr GG was adamant that I could expect no help from him in polishing off a dessert, so I asked the waitress if she would mind adding a scoop of ginger gelato to the Banana & Hazelnut Tarte, after checking with the kitchen she informed me that it would be no problem.

When the dessert arrived I was in pure gelato heaven! I simply cannot describe the flavours. The dessert was served with a sweet caramalised banana which combined with the warmth of the ginger and the cream cold banana ice-cream was mind blowing. There were so many oohs and aahs going on, that hubby was tempted to try the dessert. He agreed that it was really something else. I would have been happy just eating the gelato and caramalised banana. Ginger and banana gelato are a perfect match.
The tart was the cutest little thing. The shortcrust shell being unbelievably thin and crisp, the filling was beautiful and moist with a rich dollop of chocolate in the top. In all it was a delicious dessert and a delicious meal. We were both very happy with our choices and the general ambiance of the restaurant. It is quietly elegant and somewhere to consider for a special occasion.

Fiasco Ristorante & Bar

What is the Fiasco experience? Bar Fiasco is a modern wine bar with an extensive wine menu of both local and international varieties. Ristorante Fiasco is authentic Italian regional cuisine with all the subtle extras’ which make you feel you are dining in a restaurant in Northern Italy. It is the combination of sophistication and elegance, with a charming honest Italian family atmosphere.
There is something truly wonderful about having a waiter with a strong Italian accent, or listening to the staccato instructions being given to staff in the native language.
It was a beautiful evening and we were seated outside in the courtyard to admire the sunset. The courtyard is a column filled space surrounded by gardens containing fresh herbs.

We were given a complimentary bowl of baby olives and the menus to peruse. At thirteen pages, the wine menu was the most comprehensive I have seen in Coffs Harbour. We were impressed at the varieties of wine on offer, and the regions represented. I can honestly say I have never sampled a true Sangiovese from Tuscany before, and I was excited! This was going to be a complete experience.
If you are having trouble choosing a wine, Bar Fiasco has a resident sommelier that has had an international career spanning three decades. He studied wine technology at Monash University and is certified by The International Court of Master Sommeliers.
Naturally the bar is not limited to wine alone. There is a great range of 18 beers, including local boutique beer from Bellingen, and a range of imported varieties. If you fancy a cocktail there is a full page to choose from.

The menu is mouth watering! The Ristorante uses fresh, local and imported ingredients with a real taste of Italy. Simone (sim-on-ay) our waiter tells us the menu changes regularly to suit the seasons. I chose the Fiori Di Zucchini Ripieni as an entrée to share with my lovely husband. The zucchini flowers are crumbed and filled. They are deliciously crispy on the outside with a smooth creamy pecorino and potato filling. The dish is presented beautifully on a tile with a salad of fresh flowers, heirloom tomato and mint.
The Italian wine certainly compliments the food and the atmosphere. Simone explains that Fiasco is a family owned business involving the extended family. Simone and Stefano (chef) have only lived in Australia for the last 5 years only, which also explains the authentic feel, the passion and the strong accents.
We enjoy a second glass of wine and admire the food being delivered to tables. It is all gorgeously presented and we promise each other that we will be back soon to try more dishes.

Our mains arrive, Mr GG has ordered the Pasta Ai Gamberi which is a delicious house made potato gnocchi served with Yamba prawns and finished with a burnt butter and black truffle sauce. The flavour is perfect; the gnocchi has been cut into cute little pieces to suit the size of the prawn perfectly. The prawn is deliciously light and fresh and the parsley finishes the taste of summer nicely.

My main is the Petto D’anatra, a Hastings Valley marinated duck breast served with caponata and puree of chick pea with juniper berry and port jus. This meal is to die for! There is no other way to describe the mouthwatering brilliance of the sauce. The more I ate the more I craved. I will struggle to go past this dish in future visits.
The duck itself was crispy skinned and succulent, cooked perfectly. It is served on a chick pea puree with tiny diced eggplant, raisin and zucchini, it looked like a Lebanese style of dish but tasted rich and modern. Mr GG and I spoke about how we could have just drunk the sauce straight from a jug.
In my opinion this is the pick of the restaurants in Coffs Harbour at the moment, it easily outshines others in the area. It has the location, the atmosphere, the service, the wine and a delicious menu which suits formal or casual dining. I had noted a Pancetta and Gorgonzola pizza on the menu which I would love to try on a more causal night.

I had managed to save a little space for dessert. The menu includes very tradition Italian desserts, presented in a modern style. I chose the Macedonia di Frutta. Which is a fresh stone fruit salad macerated in moscato and finished with a spiced lemon custard. The dessert was served in a scooped bowl with the fruit hidden under the zesty cheesecake foam. It was deliciously sweet, light and fluffy. It was the ideal summer dessert, a grown up fruit salad with lemon sherbet. The perfect finish to a beautiful evening!
Bar Fiasco is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm. Ristorante opens at 6.00pm, for bookings phone 6651 2006. Fiasco is located on the Jetty strip of restaurants at 22 Orlando Street Coffs Harbour.

Chinese Dragon Restaurant

We have just said farewell to Mana, our Japanese student. She is returning home to her family after spending three months living with us, in Australia. It is very sad, and there have been tears, but it has also been a very rewarding and enriching experience for our whole family.

For three months we have been part of an extended Japanese family. We have hosted Mana, and also opened our house to her friends. Mayumi is the most outgoing in the group, she has chase the “little ones” around the house until both her and the children have been worn out. Tomo and Mana spent a day in the kitchen with me showing me how to make some traditional dishes, Chawan Mushi and Suki-yaki. Naho is the quietest of the friends but she always joins in when the “family” gets together.

For our last meal together we decided on a Chinese at “The Dragon Restaurant” We were joined for dinner by the iFamily.

The Dragon Restaurant has been open in Coffs Harbour since the early 1980’s. It hasn’t had a facelift since then but it is “cute” in its retro Chinese appearance, and the meals are both generous and delicious.
There are no real surprises on the menu, just all the regular dishes.

We had starters of short soup, sang chow bow, and mini spring rolls which turned up piping hot almost before we finished ordering!

We surprised Mana with a gift. She is a fan of the “Red Hot Chili Peppers” so we bought her a RHCP shirt, thankfully we were able to get it in XS! Despite all the baking, homemade pizza and cooking Mana kept her tiny figure.

True to form the mains were served only a heartbeat after the starters. We were all hungry so the “lazy Susan” in the centre of the table was getting a fair spin there for a while.

We had chosen, Special Fried Rice, Honey King Prawns, Mongolian Beef, Chicken Chow Mien, Garlic Beef with Vegetables and Sweet & Sour Pork. The meal was absolutely delicious, I couldn’t choose which was the nicest dish on the table. They were all great in that sticky, oily garlicky way. We all left the table very satisfied, if not a little sad that this was our last meal with Mana.

We will see you again Mana, Myumi, Naho, and Tomo, until then, keep practicing your English!

Urban Espresso Lounge

At the risk of sounding like a mum, I love it when restaurants and cafes put milkshakes in sensible plastic cups with lids. It saves so many spills and tears. We have finally made it to Urban, one of the restaurants on the popular Jetty strip at Coffs Harbour.
I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather, and enjoy a lazy lunch watching the afternoon go by with a bottle of wine. Actually I was the only one that really wanted a bottle of wine but I managed to convince the rest of our party that the afternoon was for enjoying, and not for worrying too much about work commitments.

We ordered a bottle of the Stonefish Verdelho which was a lovely crisp white that everyone enjoyed. ($22.00 per bottle) Ordering lunch was a little harder as there were a few items on the menu I would have liked to try.
I eventually decided on the mezze plate ($24.90) for two> My littlest daughter had joined us for lunch so I thought it would be good to order something which she and I could share. Since she is a little young for wine I also order her a strawberry milkshake, after that I don't think I heard boo from her, she was most content.

Mr GG ordered from the special board and chose a grilled Mahi Mahi fillet served with with a creamy herb polenta and topped with salsa verde and a roasted capsicum caponata ($16.90). The third member of our party decided on a simple Urban Caesar salad with oven dried proscuitto. ($13.00)
When my mezze plate for two arrived I realized it might have been a little ambitious of me to expect that I could tackle this with a three year old. It was huge! It would have been the perfect dish to share with a couple of friends, but I was going to a no chance with a three year old.

The plate had a great range of flavours, some of these were corn fritters, rocket, roasted capsicum, dips, cheeses, chorizo sausage, dolmades and three types of olives. Little Anais and I did the best we could but we looked to hubby to finish it for us. Even he pulled up short of the finishing line.

I was really impressed with the Caesar salad. This is something I never order as although it is standard café fare, there is a huge variation in the good and the bad. I have been served everything from all lettuce with a sprinkling of mashed egg to a sodden limp salad soaked in dressing. The Urban Caesar was delicious, there was a good amount of proscuitto and egg and it was certainly a very filling and tasty salad.

The grilled Mahi Mahi was beautifully moist and sweet. The roasted capsicum was a perfect flavour match to the creamy herbed polenta. Mr GG was very happy with his lunch choice.
We took our time over lunch enjoying the bottle of wine and attempting to do justice to my mezze plate but eventually it was time to return to the real world again. So tell me readers, what are your thoughts on having a glass of wine through the day. When I go out for lunch it doesn’t feel complete without a glass or two.

Tandoori Oven V's Oberois Indian Restaurant

Coffs Harbour has a large population of residents with a Sikh Indian heritage, and as such we have quite a few delicious Indian Restaurants to choose from. Over the years Mr GG and I have developed a strong preference for a Oberois Indian Restaurant. Oberois is a family own business and has been operating for 35 years, initially in Woolgoolga and now on the Jetty strip in Coffs Harbour.
I hate to admit this, but we always have the same two dishes. I get a Lamb Korma and I request for it to be made hot, and hubby orders a Butter Chicken. The rice is complimentary, and we usually add four naan breads and a serve of vegetarian samosa to the order. The meal comes to $51.00, and we are in food heaven.

I would love to vary the dishes but the Lamb Korma is so good I can’t give up this dish. I know… it is a sad state of affairs, and yes, I am embarrassed. Especially given Oberois has a great menu and the specials change regularly.
Some time ago I suggested to friends that we should go out for Indian. If I am honest I was hoping to try a few more dishes. That is when we struck a problem. Our friend’s favourite Indian Restaurant is the Tandoori Oven, about three restaurants along from Oberois. Like us the owners were long time family friends, and like us, they had their favourite dishes and didn’t vary the order.
Needless to say, as yet we haven’t sat down to an Indian meal with our friends. Tonight everything changes. We are each ordering our favourite dishes from each restaurant and we will be comparing. Secretly I am hoping to convert our friends to Oberois, so we can share a meal at the restaurant in the future. Although I suspected the other couple may have the same idea.

We will be comparing flavour, cost, and meal size and I am hoping by the end we have a definitive answer. Which restaurant is the best Indian in Coffs Harbour.
The competitive nature of both couples was immediately apparent. I heard Scott taunting Mr GG “our order will be ready faster than yours!” Then to iWife, “you speak to her and we might get a bigger serve”. Ahh tactics, something tells me it is going to be a tough contest.
As it turned out both meals were going to be ready at 7.30pm. iWife and I went to collect our orders. The first stop was Oberois, it was busy as usual but the order was ready and waiting as promised. The aroma was killing me, I wondered if anyone would notice a missing samosa?

Next we went to the Tandoori Oven. I have to admit this restaurant has the edge in décor. A recent renovation has it looking modern and inviting. Our meal is ready and waiting so we pay for it and rush home for the sampling. Whilst in the car we compare prices and find the Tandoori Oven was $20 more expensive at $71.00. Further investigation reveals this is due to an additional entree of Tandoori Lamb Cutlets, $14.90 (3 cutlets), so the actual discrepancy in price was only $5.00.
As we unload our purchases it was clear that the Oberois serving sizes were larger. A quick check on the scales showed each of the curry dishes to be 150gm heavier than the Tandoori oven. The nan bread and the samosa were the same weight.

With the technical issues out of the way we were all hungry and ready to dive into dinner. We served ourselves a divided plate of food from the two restaurants and began our tasting.
If I thought the judging was going to be easy I was very much mistaken. iFamily agreed that the Butter Chicken from Oberois was sweeter, but they were a little put off by the smaller pieces of chicken in a large amount of sauce. Hubby loves the sauce, so he is happiest when the chicken is smaller sized and swimming in sauce, allowing him to scoop it up with his naan bread. Both dishes have probably a similar amount of meat and at the end of tasting the dish we are no closer to swaying the vote. The best we could come up on is agreeing that both families would be happy to eat Butter Chicken from either restaurant.

Next was my beloved dish, lamb korma. The two restaurants each put up two completely different dishes by the same name. They were so obviously different that comparison wasn’t even possible. My Korma is made on a cream and lemon sauce with ground cashew and has loads of small pieces of meat in a “soupy sauce” which I requested to be hot. Just the way I like it. iFamilies Korma had large pieces of meat in a far thicker yoghurt based curry with fruit, nuts cardamom pods etc. It was a mild curry. The flavours and textures were completely different. I enjoyed both dishes and I would happily order this curry, but it was not the same curry I associate with lamb korma.
There was a clear winner in the naan bread department, and it wasn’t ours! The Tandoori Oven’s naan were so much nicer, they were light and puffy, garlicy and delicious. Perhaps someone had a bad day at Oberois because ours were not as nice.

So what is the outcome? Ours meal was slightly cheaper and a bigger serving, but the naan bread is amazing from the Tandoori Oven’s. I love the flavour of our curries and the vege samosa. BUT, I loved the Tandoori Ovens Tandoori Lamb Cutlet it was amazing. I am told the meat samosa from the Tandoori Oven was “pretty amazing” but I was not quick enough in to verify that one myself. The two Butter Chicken dishes were really similar, but the Korma’s were worlds apart. So what is the verdict??
The only conclusion we could come to, is that we were trying to split hairs. It was a delicious meal from both restaurants. We were full and content, we all agreed we would happily eat at either restaurant. There are dishes I am looking forward to trying from the Tandoori Oven and I am going to also extend myself a little at Oberois and try more of their dishes too. I guess I learned I need to broaden my horizons a little. iFamily have come to a similar conclusion.

Beautiful post Julie and it brought tears to my eyes because I know from talking to you how much she meant to you. This post just brought it to words beautifully.
What a beautiful way to remember your gorgeous girl! Just reading yours and her story bought back the small number of memories I have about Kaela, the one that is forefront in my mind and always hovers there is the complete and utter joy I saw her showing on your wedding day. I think it was Manny whizzing her round and round in her chair on the sand and she was smiling and laughing so much! Loved it!!
Julie you are an amazing mum, the love you have for all your children is to be admired and emulated by others.
Our thoughts and love to you and yours today and always xx
Dear Julie,
I think that this post is such a beautiful way to remember the life of your daughter. Reading this brought a tear to my eye. I want to go over and give you a big fat hug right now.
NOTHING in this world can ever, ever compare to a Mother's love for her child, just as you've shown Kaela and your other children. I'm sure Kaela was very happy to have YOU as her mother and that in many ways, she was able to show love to others because she was first shown love from you, too. Her life is a true testament of courage and strength and I'm sure each day with her felt like the biggest blessing of all. You should be proud to say that your beautiful daughter, Kaela, has touched more people in her 16 years of life than most of us ever could in our whole lives, even till this day.
I have so much respect for you and other mothers out there who's had the same experience. I've never read such an honest, heartfelt and emotionally raw post and I applaud your courage to share this. I don't think it's fair to say that I understand your pain but I hope you know that your post has really touched me and many others out there right now. Cheers to many more celebrations to commemorate the wonderful life that Kaela has led on earth. It's painful but it's a joyous thing. Take care.
Love,
Winston.
Hey little sister..
Wow, for someone who always has so much to say, I find myself at a lose for words, and wanting to be very quiet.. Lisa and I are both crying on the bed, and I find myself thinking..
Wow has it been so long.. 1991.. Such a bright little star she was..
I remember sitting on your couch holding her, playing with a squeakily toy frog, cause she seemed to like that at Sir Thomas Michelle Rd.
Or Singing her Metallica when she was crying, okay perhaps it was not as effective as Tori, but.. We work with what we have.
Love you very much Little Sister..
That is about all I can say little one, Love you very much..!
T & L
Kaela Elisa is looking down at us as we speak, she was strong and she would like to see her family strong and continue to celebrate the beautiful times you spent with her. We all miss her.
Thanks Donna,
You are a fantastic mum and aunty. I hope you liked my tribute to K
Thank you so much for your thoughts and kind words.
It means so much to be coming from three mums.
You never know exactly how much you are opening your heart up when you choose to have a child.
Even healthy children give mum's so much to worry about, as you would all know!
I am pleased I wrote the story, it was really nice to share :)
...but I would not have had it any other way :)
