Las Vegas is all about the show!
And they are spectacular! Whilst we were visiting Las Vegas there were eight different Cirque Du Soleil shows being performed in the most gorgeous MGM properties.
Each Cirque Du Soleil production is an absolute extravaganza. Anais and I decided on Zarkana which was being performed at the Aria.
Zarkana is a story portrayed with acrobatics, theatrics and humour about a magician called Zark who has lost his love and his magic. Its set in an abandoned theatre where Zark begs the Gods for the return of his love. The story dives into surreal mythological creatures, temptresses and characters of the theatre.
Watching the story unfold is enthralling as characters are introduced to the audience and the explosive energy of the cast takes to the high wire. The storytelling is such a raw combination of grace, acrobatics, inspired strength and sensual ballet.
Haunting music and songs are performed. Anais and I were mesmerised!
“MUM! They’re just holding hands, omg, omg!! What if he drops him!!” she exclaims.
All I could do is just stare, I was in awe of the amazing ability of these performers.
“They don’t have a string and they’re spinning,” she exclaimed at another point in the show. “What if he hits his head?”
Anais and I spent so much of the show wide eyed. I was gripping the seat, and Anais had her hand over her mouth. It was wonderful to see her uninhibited response to such an overwhelmingly intense, sensory experience.
One minute the audience is on the edge of their seats as the athletic acrobatic bodies fly through the air with strength and grace. Then Zarkana introduced the comedians of the circus. The clowns were on stage and laughter erupted throughout the theatre.
The Zarkana production brings all the usual circus characters to life including these white clowns which are known in the show as “Movers”. The clowns provide some comic relief in between the breath taking acrobatic sets.
Children were in hysterics and adults had a chance to relax as the clowns tell their own story. Anais had a fit of giggles as the clowns played up to the crowd.
“Can we get a woot woot” they ask as they tripped and tumbled on stage.
Meanwhile the set changes and the Zarkana story continues.
The Oracle is the communicator between past and future and haunting ethereal musical surrounds the theatre. The audience attention is drawn to a surreal sand painting projection.
The oracle swirls sand on the glass and bit by bit a figure slowly appears.
I asked Anais what she thought at the end of the show. “It’s so amazing mum!!” was her answer.
Zarkana is fantasy, craziness and a complete mesmerising out of this world experience. It’s pure theatre.
Showtime Las Vegas style is very much about seeing a Cirque Du Soleil show. Zarkana is a show with something for the whole family.
