Black & White Wednesday - Apples

Black and white apples. black and white wednesday

Here we go again with another Black & White Wednesday. I have chosen to do a studio still life and used a mix of dots and stripes in the tea towels to add interest. Let me know what you think.

The are many more gorgeous black and white images on our host Susan from  the “Well Seasoned Cook” website.  Thank you once again Susan for hosting Black & White Wednesday.

Black & White Wednesday - Market Beets

Black and White Beetroot

It is time for another Black & White Wednesday. I have been participating in this event for about two months now and I feel I am starting to "see" images which will work in Black & White.  This display of vegetables looked very unexciting on the market table but I immediately knew it would make a great black & white subject.

Here is the colour version.  What do you think? Which image do you feel is more interesting?

Black & White Wednesday - Empty Bottles

Bottles on display at cafe ish surry hills

I saw this bottle display whilst lunching with my brother at Cafe ish in Surry Hills. Below I have included the colour version of this image. I think the rendering of the scene in black and white makes for a stronger image and suits the structured display better than the coloured version.

Feel free to correct me or add any comments.

I always shoot in colour and then convert the image to black and white using photoshop. I tend to follow the path IMAGE, ADJUSTMENTS, BLACK & WHITE to convert and image to B&W. This then allows me to adjust the filters to determine which filter will give the best Black & White end image. Other methods of converting to B&W discards very useful colour information.

Take a look at the same image below using a Blue, Green and Red Filter in the B&W conversion (in that order).

The differences are subtle in a small image but much more noticeable in a full size image.

Black & White Wednesday - Cafe

Black and white Wednesday, cafe

I love the swirls of the creme, and the grain of the wood in the table.  I was busy editing this photo for a cafe a review when I looked at the image properly and immediately knew it would translate well to black and white.

I hope readers are enjoying my little Black & White Wednesday indulgence.  I realise that this is more about photography than food, but creating gorgeous images is something I really enjoy.  It is also such an important part of my website because I love to bring readers beautiful images, which then help me to tell a story. It may even be that I spend more time on my images than my writing... I am not sure, but before I have written a word I have imagined the finished product, styled the set, lite the image, taken the photo and then edited all the images.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed a peak into the striped away world of Black & White.  There are so many more gorgeous images on our host Susan from  the “Well Seasoned Cook” website.  Thank you once again susan for hosting Black & White Wednesday.

Black & White Wednesday - Nutcracker

Posted October 12, 2011

The Nutcracker

I have entitled this image "The Nutcracker", pictured are some Macadamia nuts I recently received from Lorne Valley Macadamia in Port Macquarie. The nuts are sitting in a Mortar & Pestle that I purchased whilst in Bali.

I chose this image for a black and white conversion because I wanted the image to be about textures.  The shiny, smooth nuts, the coarse stone mortar and pestle and the woven pattern in the mat.

Hope you like the photo and the thoughts behind it.

Please visit my fellow photographers and see what they have been photographing this week for black and white Wednesday.

Black & White Wednesday - Tempura Ice-cream anyone!

Black and white Wednesday

Are you licking lips and imagining tipping that jug of chocolate syrup directly into your mouth? I know that’s exactly what goes through my mind when I look at this image!

Tempura Ice-cream

I don’t think this subject loses anything by being presented in a black and white format.  Perhaps it even gains that timeless appeal that only a "black and white" can achieve.

Once again thank you to Susan from the “Well Seasoned Cook” for hosting Black & White Wednesday.

Please make sure you check out the other entries in Susan's Black White Gallery.

This image is taken from tomorrow's story, so stay tuned for the "full colour" version and a real eating adventure!

Black & White Wednesday - Dried Chilli

Black and White Wednesday

Welcome back to Black and White Wednesday hosted by Susan of “The Well Seasoned Cook”

Black and White Dried ChilisThis week I have chosen to use a shot which included red and green dried chilli.  I like the contrast between the two colours and the texture of the basket behind although I think I should have aimed for a greater depth of field in the image for it to work better as a B&W photograph. I think Black & White images look better when they are punchy and sharp.

Let me know what you think...

Oh and make sure you check out the other entries in Susan's Black White Gallery.

Black & White Wednesday #6

Black and white Wednesday

I am back again with another Black & White image for Black & White Wednesday.  I have chosen an image from my recent trip to Bali.

Bali Lime

Bali Limes

These limes were growing on a verandah in a pot at a cooking school which I attended on my most recent trip.  We used quite a few in the delicious peanut sauce.

Black & White Wednesday #4

Black & White Wednesday

When we think of food images we mostly think of styled, full colour shots with drippingly delicious close ups. Not many food images are captured with black & white in mind.  Having said that I love black & white photography and anyone who knows me will attest that just about every image in my house is B&W.

So when I heard about Black & White Wednesday hosted by Susan of “The Well Seasoned Cook” I thought it would be a good opportunity to put down my fork, and work on something a little more arty.

 Coffee Beans

I might even share the odd tip, although there isn’t a lot of magic to black and white. I find the key is selecting the right image to start with.

Davids Fine Coffee Davids Fine Coffee Black & White

I chose this image because it has an appealing repeating pattern with some interesting textures. I like it better in the black and white than the original colour.  I feel that it’s a lot more punchy.

What do you think?

A lot of your blogs will be interactively design and style that visitor share data to read your blog.

Thank you so much, it is going to be a wonderful surprise for my Mum, I wish everyone a great day with your own special people, those who helped you become who you are today.

Mum definitely deserves the hamper, because she is an amazing woman that has brought up 3 kids through tough times. She is the best mum a son could ask for.

She's had it tough, working hard
deserving much more than just a card
So let's raise a glass and toast her true
The best person in the world - Mum, that's you!

Thanks for the info on Rasa Malaysia's book. I used to visit her website for recipes but some time ago, igot a new PC and forgot to bookmark it!

You're too modest Julie! You did a great job with the cake! :D

Yellow strawberries and cream is just perfect for mum as a reward for putting up with two kids who were a pain in the bum.

I would have loved to have seen those martini glasses! Hope Miss A had a lovely time celebrating turning 5 :D

It shouldn't. It should go to me as whilst trying to make sure my mum, step-mum, MIL, Step-MIL, 3 x Grandmas are spoilt on Mother's Day, I always seem to get forgotten!

My poor old mum is battling to care for my step dad who has advanced Parkinsons. My real dad who has had a stroke still expects her to be there for him, my bro is going bankrupt and she lives two states away from her only gransdon. Her life has little joy- JUst wish for one thing nice to happen to her. We all love our mums, good luck to you all!

Perfect place to relax and forget about all the troubles we have in the city and just unwind ~ can't wait to go to somewhere like this hehe
