Palazzo Versace - Opulance on the Gold Coast

“Oh my God” I say to Mr GG and I melt into the sumptuous puffy layers of bedding and linen. “Bed is good!” I am sure I do not spend nearly enough time in bed. At the moment it is 11.30pm and I have just turned to jelly as my tired body, fresh from a gorgeous hot spa fell into bed. There are so many layer of soft body pillows and a gorgeous thick doona. What’s not to love about sinking in to the bed in my “superior suite" at the Palazzo Versace Hotel on the Gold Coast.
I have to say I was sold before the bed and the spa. On arrival we found these gorgeous chocolates and some caramel fudge beside the bed. I have to apologise, there is no photo of the caramel, even as I was devouring them I knew I should stop and photograph, but alas, caramel is my favourite, so there aren’t any pictures.
I am sure the sweets were suppose to be for sharing but let’s just say, given that I didn’t managed to photograph the fudge the kiddies didn’t get much of a look in.. I would have succeeded in scoffing the lot bit Mr Cool (aka youngest son) spotted me munching; so I had to share the last two caramels. Never mind, he hadn’t spotted the red lips chocolates which were filled with strawberry fondant. Delicious.

The Superior Suite is just the right size for mum dad & two little kids. We have our own separate bedroom with a King size bed. The kids are in the lounge room. They will sleep on the sofa bed. By day the sofa is utilised as a lounge, and of a night the turn down service makes up the bed.

I love the attention to detail in the room. The finishing touches are all about luxury, relaxation and elegance. I love that I drink my tea from a proper tea cup, the soaps are pressed into a mould with the Versace insignia, the towels are thick and luxurious, bathrobes and slippers are so soft.
“ Hi we are in room 368, concierge parked our car for us last night but we have left the children shoes in the vehicle, do you think you could organise someone to bring them up for us?” “Certainly sir!” Just another example of the service we experienced on the way to breakfast.

The foyers are grand, and the furniture is opulent. I am obviously a bit of a spoiled princess because it is these things which feel like homey relaxation to me.

The view from the foyer is over a man made white sand “beach” setting, complete with king sized daybeds draped with white muslin. It is such a gorgeous vista. The comfort factor in this hotel has not been overlooked in any area.

I walk past the pool bar and notice an array of champagne would tempt me to indulge at any hour of the day or night. Veuve Clicquot and Moet seem to be the most popular bubbly. If you would prefer something a little more hydrating there is always the water with fresh citrus slices.

The pool area is designed for relaxation. It would be easy to spend a whole day simply lounging and reading a book. Every guest has a comfortable bed by the pool, there are no hard plastic chairs in sight.

The breakfast buffet may be a little smaller than some, but the quality of the food is exquisite. Luscious moist smoked salmon, creamy scrambled eggs and the best cappuccino I have had for so long make this breakfast something a little special.

For those that enjoy the sweeter element at breakfast there is always the caramelised banana, French toast, pancakes and an array of cakes and pastries.

Myself, I am also a bit partial to the fresh fruit salad, yoghurts and Bircher muesli. I few years ago I found my ultimate recipe and I have made it for myself ever since. It is not nearly as decadent as the Versace Bircher Muesli but I feel that I have discovered a healthier version. My recipe omits the cream and substituted low fat Vanilla Yoghurt. It is still delicious, but not so much of a guilty pleasure now.

It is Versace, so I think we need to make mention of the beautiful fashions. The pieces shown in the boutique and in the displays are seriously gorgeous, and seriously stylish. I love this dress!

I know it would fit me like a glove and I am instantly in love. This hotel gives you the feeling that you were made for the opulence. After two days at the Palazzo Versace I am so relaxed that I may never return to the real world. The level of service is like no other. The staffing is such, that there is someone to attend to your every need.
A stroll of an evening and the surrounds are more beautiful and so romantic. There is a tinge of blue out over the water and the night is still and warm.

We have enjoyed a meal in the restaurant. It was a private function but naturally I will share the menu.
Braised Cinnamon Duck leg served with honeyed red cabbage and duck jus, garnished with a Parmesan crisp. This was my favourite course. The crispy skinned duck, with moist sweet flesh was amazing against the acidic cabbage.

The main was a fillet of black Angus Beef "en croute" with truffled potato and Vichy carrots with red wine jus.
Finally for dessert a Tiramisu with espresso cream and a strawberry and orange salad. The salad was so sweet fresh and citrusy, I could have eaten so much more of this delicious flavour combination.
I would highly recommend the Palazzo Versace, it is truly a step up when it comes to service and style.

I have always considered “The Marriott’s” seafood buffet to be the best of all the hotels on the Gold Coast. They serve copious quantities of delicious fresh seafood, feature live cooking stations and luscious desserts. On a recent visit to the Gold Coast I was pleased to find that the restaurant had just reopened after a huge refurbishment and a name change. I would have been devastated if our stay at the Marriott didn’t include an evening enjoying their famous buffet.

So what is new? The restaurant appears larger, and I am told there is more seating. It has definitely been modernised. The Marriott has always had “live” cooking stations at their buffet which allows guest to order custom made dishes and interact with the chef as the order is completed. There is now more emphasis on this aspect of the buffet with a live pizza station, risotto station, laksa noodle station and more.

The buffet is broken into zones, firstly the “Cold Zone” which features an absolute abundance of fresh local seafood, sushi and sashimi, salads, deli-style cured meats, antipastos and cheeses.

Seafood Selection

Sashimi Selection

Antipasto Selection

Cheese Platter

Fruit & Nut Selection

Salads in the "Cold Zone"

Pancetta & Witlof Salad

Pumpkin Feta & Walnut Salad

Tomato & Chorizo Salad
The Hot Zones offer a selection of European dishes, exotic curries and a Yum Cha Steamer Station.

Salt & Pepper Squid & Prawn with Blood Orange

Mi Goreng Pork & Prawn

Szechwan Chicken & Beans

The Grill Zone has a variety of Indonesian-style satay skewers and roast meats on offer.

Decadence Zone displays an ice cream station complete with a condiments bar and hand crafted desserts prepared by the pastry team.

Most of my time was spent enjoying the delicious seafood. I am probably not the best person to bring to a buffet because I fill up very quickly. Knowing this, I have learnt to choose wisely. You can see my gorgeous plate of succulent seafood.

I returned for my hot seafood selection, Oysters Kilpatrick and a moist delicate grilled snapper in a creamy saffron sauce.

I tried a mouthful of the mushroom risotto, it was so creamy and flavoursome I cursed the fact that I would not be able to manage a bowl of this and a dessert plate. I had already wandered amongst the desserts and I knew I needed to save a dessert space!

Mr GG ploughed through platefuls of seafood like a trooper. He then commenced on the satay stick, steamed pork buns and Szechwan chicken.

The children enjoyed a variety of food and then had some pizza. We had sat way to close to the dessert bar, and before to long the inevitable trips to the ice-cream commenced, as did the filling of bowls with M&M’s!

Ice-cream Selection

Toppings for Ice-cream

After a long "rest" break and a glass of wine I felt I had made
space for a plate of desserts. I love little baby sized treats because it means
I can fit more variety on my plate. My favourite bite size treat was the lemon meringue pie
closely followed by the chocolate mousse tart.
Once again the Marriott is the benchmark for buffet dining.

2 in 1 Japanese Bakery, Gold Coast

2 in 1 Japanese Bakery
Robina, Gold Coast
I have two pet hates, the first... food franchises, the second... food courts. So how is it that I am eating from a franchise in a food court? The answer is, my curiosity got the better of me! A friend mentioned there was a Japanese bakery which had opened up near her house only a month early, and they had the most gorgeous cakes. Those are magic words to me so I fell, hook, line and sinker.

This rather unique bakery displays sweet and savoury baked goods, in clear plastic bins allowing for self service. Whilst I was only intending to take a few photos and sample one or two items the strange sounding names got the better of me and before too long I had piled a bunch of bakery items on a tray and was heading to the cashier.

The first item on my tray was a Curry Donut. I was interested to see if it would resemble anything we had eaten in Japan. Surprisingly the yeasty sweet bread took me straight back buying bread in Kyoto. The bread was unimaginable light, white and fluffy, with a hefty dose of yeast and sugar to boot. The outside had been fried in a crunchy crumb. The curry inside the donut was the delicious Japanese style sweet curry which I love. So all in all it was an okay experience. It was still not my favourite food or setting, but definitely bringing back food memories of Japan.

My Savoury Selection
Next up was the “Ham Boat.” The bread was the same light sweet bread, but this time shaped as a roll with sweet caramelised onion, cheese and ham baked on top. It was a strange combination of sweet and savoury but still quite good.

For the little ones I bought a “Hot Dog.” Whilst it looked pretty much like any other hotdog the bread was once again the sweet light Japanese style bread so the hotdog tasted like no other. The roll was baked with cheese and herbs but had the texture of the lightest sponge cake. The children treated the flavour with suspicion, but ate it just the same.

The Nagoya Donut had an authentic Japanese look. The three balls had been covered in bonito flakes and made to look like Takoyaki. When we bit into the crispy exterior we found a light sweet bun filled with seasoned rice and pork. The flavour was good but all the tastes by this time were starting to have the same artificial, chemical taste.

The dessert cakes I purchased were really not my cup of tea. I have a feeling that I could have left them on the counter for a month with no appreciable change.
The lemon cupcake was probably the nicer of the sweets as I didn’t mind the zesty lemon flavour and the cake had a nice crumb.

The box of profiteroles were filled with a crème patisserie in vanilla, green tea and chocolate flavours.

On the whole it was an interesting experience but I don’t think one that I will repeat any time soon.

Benihana Restaurant - Marriott Surfers

Move over Iron Chef Sakai, “Benihana’s Restaurant” cuisine reigns supreme!

Surely we are on the set of Iron Chef? Prawns are flying, salt shakers are being tossed into the red chef’s hat, there are flames shooting up toward the roof, this is most certainly not your average restaurant. This is dinner and a show!

There’s a baby behind those flame! We are seated at a hotplate with a family of three who live on the coast. They love the chef’s theatrics and say Benihana is one of their favourite restaurants, which is why they have booked in again for Michaels 40th Birthday. Baby Lachlan, (who is hidden behind the flames) was wide eyed and silent whilst food was tossed either side for his parents to catch in their mouth.

It is lively entertainment and before too long my cheeks are sore from laughing, smiling and cheering! The kids laugh openly as chef pours “coke” (soy sauce) on the prawns and I am pleased he is using “Jenny Craig” butter, on the salmon which he announces is “chicken” he sprinkles on the MSG (actually salt) and we are all in tears laughing at this hodge podge of ingredients.
In actually fact what I love most about the restaurant was the fact that the food was so fresh healthy and delicious, it was completely unadulterated and natural.

The meal started with a light refreshing bowl of onion soup, followed by the Benihana salad which features a very Japanese style dressing of ginger, soy sauce, lemon and shallots.

Thankfully our dining companions upgraded our order of steamed rice to the house special Hibachi Rice, a fried rice which is also made on the grill.

The Hibachi rice saw eggs balanced on the grill, frantic chopping and juggling of utensils and ingredients and the odd prawn tossed expertly into an unexpected mouth.

Even the kiddies managed to catch a prawn or two in their mouth although the first prawn did land squarely in an eye!

It mayhem at the grill, but my order of salmon is prepared perfectly, barely cooked, deliciously moist and tender.

Mr GG was having the chicken and beef set, and again, “fresh is best” which is exactly what we received.

Thanks to the generosity of our dining companions Michael and Kylie we also tried the snapper which is part of the seafood deluxe set. The snapper is cooked on the grill in a paper parcel filled with onions, shallot and teriyaki sauce. This was the clear winner! The snapper was so moist and soft it defies my chopsticks. The teriyaki has caramelised with the onions and I am in a syrupy heaven. The set also came with plump seared scallops and more delicious prawns.

Dining with children means there is always a dessert space to be filled. Tempura ice cream was the order of the day. As near as I could tell you take one GIANT ball of ice-cream and coat it in what appears to be a donut batter. The encased ice-cream is deep fried to golden perfection, the result being a light fluffy donut with and ice-cream centre. The ice-cream is sliced in three and served with a choice of syrups to drizzle over.

I cannot remember, or even imagine a more exciting or memorable meal. Have you experienced something similar?

Finding Nemo - Gold Coast

Finding Nemo on the Gold Coast
I have been quite busy lately and I really wanted to spend some quality time with my family. I decided to take advantage of the school holidays and book a quick three day getaway to the Gold Coast. I didn’t feel like all the hustle and bustle of “The Goldie” so I knew exactly where I planned to stay, The Marriot! Whilst the Marriot is located right in the heart of Surfers Paradise it is a destination unto itself. I knew that once we checked in to the hotel we would have no need to venture elsewhere.

I am sure my readers will understand that until all the kids are happy, no matter how sumptuous the bed or fluffy the pillows, there is no rest for mum and dad. I sold hubby on the idea by assuring him we would not be trekking to the fun parks this holiday, or to vineyards and obscure restaurants. This was to be a holiday of relaxing by the pool and soaking up a little bit of Gold Coast sunshine.

The pool I was referring to is actually more like a giant saltwater aquarium shared by tropical fish and guests. My children had bought snorkels, goggles and flippers and were ready to swim with the fish the moment we arrived.

There is something so cute about watching your 4 and 6 year old chasing after a Parrot fish or looking for Nemo. It was even better because I was enjoying the view from a comfortable deck lounge with a delicious cocktail in hand.

Next morning the little ones were up bright and early ready to take part in the fish feeding which occurs daily at 9.30am. I spoke to Sebastian who looks after the aquarium and he explained that there are currently 7 or 8 different species of fish in the pool at the moment. The hotel had just added another 170 tropical fish last week, these included Trigger Fish, Parrot Fish, Clown Fish and Moonrash. The lagoon is four metres deep in sections and includes two sand beaches and rocky outcrops for the fish to hide. It was part of the original Marriot build and has been in existence for nearly 20 years, but is still the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

The pool is maintained at 25 degrees and 20,000 litres of water is exchange with the neighbouring canal each day. This provides the fish with a completely natural environment; it also means that there are are no chemicals used in the pool and plenty of "wildlife" around. Apparently this guy can be seen taking an early morning dip.

Now eventually my little rugrats did want a change of venue. So I had kept a surprise up my sleeve, the Marriott also has a regular pool and spa area and a water slide for the little ones. I knew this would keep their interest for quite a while so I timed this “revelation” for an afternoon activity, ensuring it would be respectable to enjoy another cocktail or two.
We have visited the Marriot on a number of previous occasion and we always take advantage of the delicious buffet available in Citrique Restaurant.

The seafood buffet has always been something really special, and I am told that it only recently re-opened with the same head chef as we have experienced in the past. Review to follow.

Each morning before the kids were awake my gorgeous husband would take a swim in the pool, do his regular workout in the Marriott gym, and collect my morning coffee from the on site cafe Java +. Java makes a blissfully strong cappuccino which really helped get my eyes open and my heart started each day.

I also found that they had gorgeous selection of delicious desserts. I am not much of a breakfast girl but I have a sweet tooth and I couldn’t help adding a few of these little delicacies to my morning coffee request.

So what else is there to do at the Marriott Surfers Paradise? I did mention the gymnasium... I had good intentions of visiting, but alas there was always too much food in my belly to drag myself onto a piece of gym equipment.

I did however make it down to the day spa “Lattouf”, located on level one. The Express Body Overhaul is their signature treatment and it sounded like just the thing for me. I booked myself in, and received the one hour pampering which included a full body sea salt exfoliation, a moisturising massage with aromatic oils, scalp and feet massage and a full facial cleanse, exfoliate and mask. When my treatment was complete I barely knew where I was, or the day of the week!

Relaxed to the point of being almost limp, I wandered back to the room to prepare for a fun filled night with Mr GG in the hotel’s Japanese Teppanyaki Bar, Benihana. I can honestly say, I really didn't know what I was in for! Review to follow.

Whilst this has been the perfect family getaway, there is also a more romantic and exclusive option available at The Marriott. The Elandra Retreat Club offers added luxury and elegance in the rooms and services available. Located on the 27 floor guests are treated to an “elevated” level of style and service. I think this would be the perfect choice for a romantic getaway, perhaps I will have to book in and let you know ;)
So readers, what do you look for when booking accommodation, give me a list of priorities?

Gold Coast Hinterland

When we think of the Gold Coast, images of sun, surf and sand are the first that come to mind. We have recently spent a long weekend looking at the Gold Coast from a different perspective. I wanted to take a closer look at the hinterland region from Mt Cotton to Tambourine Mountain in search of a quieter getaway.
Behind the golden beaches, high in the hills are a series of picture perfect rainforest villages. They are bustling quaint towns, surrounded by lush rainforests and national parks. There are quite a number of vineyards in the area, and although it is quite new as a wine region the vineyards are award winning, and have earned their place on the wine scene.

With a full day ahead of us we decided to start with a hearty breakfast at Sirromet Winery, located at Mt Cotton. The vineyard offers a “once in a lifetime” breakfast that was on our list of things we must experience during our stay.
The drive along Mt Cotton Rd is beautiful, I immediately felt that we had left the hectic pace of the Gold Coast behind us, and we were heading for a more refined experience. Sirromet is perched high on Mt Cotton and has amazing views out to the sea. It is set amongst the Eucalypts and is absolutely picture perfect, with beautiful manicured grounds and a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

We walked through the vineyard, and the cellars and called in at the cellar door. It was a little too early for me to sample the wines but I noticed that even the cellar door has a very appealing menu if you were looking for something a little simpler than the restaurant.
Alas, it was time to drag ourselves away from the tranquility and continued our tour of the hinterland. The next stop was to be the Cedar Creek walk to burn off some of the breakfast calories. The first section on the walk is paved so the kids were able to bring their scooters and had a great time scootering around the picnic area and along the paths and board walks.

Cedar Creek would be an ideal place for a picnic but given that we had just eaten I took a few photos of the waterfall and the creek and we were on our way again.
The next stop was “Sky Walk”, and elevated 1.5km walk on an elevated platform through the through the rainforest. The rainforest is lush and through out the walk the birds are calling.
We continued on to Curtis Falls and arrived at the same time as a tour bus. The path was steep but well maintained and the kids managed it easily. We descended down the path zig zagging past strangler figs and other lush rainforest vegetation until 500 metres later we arrived at a viewing platform almost at creek level. We were rewarded with a perfect view of Curtis Falls, a gorgeously photogenic waterfall.

We continued on to Eagle Heights, a town which is overflowing with people, cafes, galleries, hand crafted boutique jewelry. We decided to take a stroll down the “Gallery Walk” which was the main street of Eagle Heights.

We spotted Gran Macs Fudge & Lolly shop which was offering fudge tasting. By this time it was early afternoon and we were finally feeling as if we may be able to eat again after our Sirromet breakfast. The fudge shop was an immediate hit with the children.

There were so many flavours on offer that I was pleased to be able to try a few different ones before I bought any. Even then it was a difficult purchasing decision. Thankfully the staff seemed to be accustomed to the indecision.

It probably comes as no surprise that I liked all the flavours. So I could have picked any one of the fudges and been truly happy. If I had to choose a favourite it would be the “lemon meringue pie” fudge. Yum, lets just say the family only got a hint of a taste of this one.

Feeling full once again we continue our stroll and passed no end of cafes and restaurants, all which would have been very appealing except that I have over indulged all day.

We enjoyed wandering through the galleries, boutique clothing and jewelry. We came to a few more stores offering tasting but alas I couldn’t accommodate another bite.

Gallery Walk is no more than a few 100 metres in length but we so much to see we had still not really finished wandering through the stores two hours later when the shops were shutting. We managed to squeeze in a little wine tasting, but even then we still had the feeling we weren't quite finished.

We will definitely be back to this area as I feel we have only just scratched the surface. I can imagine staying in a beautiful B&B with a wood fire during winter, and enjoying an alternative Gold Coast Getaway.

So no matter what the season, the Gold Coast has something to offer the gourmet traveller.
RockSalt
Shop 12, The Aria Building
Albert Ave, Broadbeach
After reading some great reviews and looking over the RockSalt menu, I decided that this would be one of the restaurants up for review while we were at the Gold Coast. In my website perusal I noted RockSalt were offering a seven course Degustation Menu and also a Tapas menu in addition to the regular lunch and dinner options. It all looked rather interesting and the food choices were particularly appealing so I made and online reservation and continued to flick through the lovely gallery food images on the website.
When we arrived I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was exactly as stated in my reading, casual and modern. Given the restaurants reputation and the "hat rating" I was expecting it to be at least a little pretentious, I was wrong. It is lovely and relaxed with a casual sophistication.
Once seated, the waiter explained the menu and specials. Mr GG had been considering sampling the seven course degustation menu but there were so many tempting options that it was obviously not going to be that simple. We spent some time looking over the menu and eventually ordered with a little help from our waiter.

The entrees arrived and although we were expecting beautiful presentation and a lovely dish we found ourselves in absolute food heaven. The dish we sampled first was the King Prawn Risotto with White Truffle Oil, Black Truffle Risotto and Cavier, and it was simply amazing. The Risotto had the perfect salty, creamy, seafood flavour, with little caviar explosions, the prawn was perfectly cooked and generously portioned. It was a dish hubby didn’t want to ever finish. I could have easily had “order envy” except that my entrée was just as good.
On the waiters recommendation I had ordered the Grilled & Confit Quail, Foie Gras Cigar, Pressed Pineapple, Hazelnuts, Baby Leaves, Sherry Vinaigrette. This was a beautiful crispy skinned quail with lovely delicate flavours, perfectly matched to the crisp cigar and creamy Foie Gras.
At this point in the meal I was very impressed. The entrees had been perfect, the waiter attentive, and the atmosphere fantastic. It is the little things which make a dining experience something special.

The main courses arrived and the presentation was exactly as you would expect from a restaurant of this calibre. With the feeling of winter in the air I had ordered the Herb & Nut Crusted Eye Fillet, Fondant Potato, Roast Shallot & Carrot Puree with Red Wine Jus. It is a fairly standard on restaurant menus but isn’t often done well in my opinion.
I had requested the Eye Fillet to be cooked rare and it was cooked to perfection, lovely, moist and flavoursome. I tend to hold my breath when I cut into my steak these days, as it is so disappointing the amount of times I’m served overdone meat. The fondant roast potato was creamy, the jus sticky and the pureed carrot completed the presentation.

I sampled Mr GG’s Assiette of Lamb – Shoulder, Loin & Cutlet, Potato Puree, Smoked Eggplant, Ruby Chard, Peas, Jus. The lamb was a “melt in your mouth” experience, matched perfectly with the eggplant and potato puree. It was another amazing meal, perfect for the Winter menu.
I am truly impressed with this restaurant, all the dishes have been amazing. Looking around there is a good mix of people enjoying the restaurant. The atmosphere is casual enough to have attracted a few larger groups of friends but it is still lovely and intimate which is evident by the number of couples enjoying a romantic evening together.
I don’t usually manage a three course meal but despite feeling a little full I am really looking forward to desert. The desert choices all looked fantastic and after the beautiful presentation of the proceeding courses I am excitedly looking forward to the Dark Chocolate & Date Pudding, Pistachio Cream, Chocolate Crumbs, Cardamom Ice Cream.

Desert is served and I wonder how many times I can use the same adjectives, luscious, amazing, heavenly. My desert was all of this and more, the Pistachio cream was amazingly sweet, sticky and silky, it looked amazing on the plate with the matching fairy floss. The Cardamom Ice-cream was lovely and light and the flavour a refreshing blend of complimentary spices which suited the chocolate and date cake perfectly. It was another dish which looked amazing on the plate and perfect on the palate.
My lovely husband chose to have a desert which included both white and milk chocolate. The desert was the White Chocolate & Cherry Terrine, Salted Peanut Caramel, Milk Chocolate Mousse, Waffle Tuile. It was an absolute taste sensation. The mouse was light and creamy the terrain had a lush Cherry Jelly layer which was just divine. It looked spectacular and tasted every bit as good.
The complexity of each dish, the degree of difficulty and the luscious taste means that this is a restaurant to come back to again and again. There is nothing on the menu to attempt at home, these dishes are not for mere mortals but for chefs alone to create. The King Prawn Risotto is the single best dish I have ever had the pleasure of eating and the Cardamom Ice cream was another clear winner in my opinion.
It is very easy to see why this restaurant holds a hat rating. The service, the food, the presentation and the atmosphere is absolutely impeccable.
The restaurant also caters for children with a “Little Tykes” menu.
Oh, and the three course meal was only $55.
